Online Media Response 2

Q CMST-105 Online Media Response #2 Review questions below and consider them when viewing the corresponding video. This week’s assignment will involve a TED Talk entitled “How to Disagree Productively and Find Common Ground” delivered by Julia Dhar, master debater and current debate coach. The video can also be found in this week’s module under the above mentioned title. Purpose of the assignment: Based on the structure of today’s means of communication we can easily “filter out” perspectives we disagree with and thus make encountering varying viewpoints intolerable. This behavior further separates those of differing views and yet the reality is that we have more in common than we do in difference BUT we choose to focus on the differences. My hope is that you will better understand how to equip yourself with the tools necessary to stand apart from the issues and not personalize the debate. There is enough room for many perspectives and we should be open to learning from others. Please provide a thoughtful response to each of the questions below: 1. According to Julia Dhar how can we use debate as a tool to help us reach common ground both in our public and private lives? 2. Why is developing a shared reality important to begin the process of considering opposing viewpoints? 3. Why is interacting face-to-face so important to the overall process of understanding those with whom we disagree? 4. Discuss your interpretation of intellectual humility and the humility of uncertainty as discuss in the clip? 5. What can you learn from the story about Mr. Rogers and Senator Pastore that may help you to be a better debater? What advice from Julia can you incorporate to improve your chances? 6. How will learning these skills help you to become a better intercultural communicator? Note: The attached rubric's point value is doubled for this assignment as it is based on 20 points.
